Mark Norval showed a precocious talent in drawing and studied art teaching in Perth. He was posted to Derby, in the remote Kimberley region in 1981, as a high school teacher. In 1998, Mark began teaching adult art classes at the Mowanjum Aboriginal Community Centre as a TAFE lecturer. Mark successfully balanced a developing art practice with his work as a teacher and later as Administrator of Mowanjum Wandjina Arts Centre. He gained wide recognition for his Kimberley paintings, capturing the spirit of the Kimberley and the people of the Kimberley in a unique way. His major achievements include : publication of the book Mark Norval Kimberley Artist 1999 written by Marty Schiel; over 59 awards in all media; outright winner of the Kimberley Art Prixe - 1984,1994,1995,1998,2000; outright winner Shinju Matsuri Art Award 1996;Centenary Medal for contribution to the Arts 2002.
